International Students
Carnegie Mellon University School of Music has a highly competitive program with many talented students from all over the world. Nearly 35% of Carnegie Mellon students are international students, representing 115 countries around the world. The university ranks in the top 10 "Most International Student Bodies," by percentage among four-year U.S. institutions.
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is a city of 300,000 people (over 2 million in the larger area) and home to a dynamic arts, cultural and technology community. Twenty members on the School of Music's faculty are members of the world renowned Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

International Undergraduate Admission
In addition to the undergraduate music application process, undergraduate international applicants should carefully review the requirements outlined by the International Undergraduate Admissions Page.
- For information on English Language Proficiency test scores, please review the language requirements section outlined by CMU Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
- Undergraduate applicants should not send scores to the School of Music directly. English proficiency test scores supporting documents should be added to your Common Application.

International Graduate Admission
As an international graduate student, you will need to complete the following items along with the Acceptd music application and supporting documents outlined in Graduate Application Requirements:
- Transcript Requirement: The School of Music accepts course-by-course credential evaluations of foreign transcripts sent from TEC (formerly SpanTran), World Education Service (WES), or Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE).
- Applicants may upload unofficial credential evaluations to the Acceptd for application review. Admitted students who choose to enroll will be required to send official, degree-conferred credential evaluations to the School of Music Office of Recruitment & Enrollment before the start of classes.
- Official course-by-course credential evaluations may be sent to Carnegie Mellon University - School of Music.
- Electronic documents are preferred.
- Language Test Requirement: All students whose native language is not English, regardless of citizenship or prior educational experience, are required to submit a test from the following list*:
- TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language),
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System), or
- Duolingo English Test
- Electronic documents are preferred.
*The School of Music only accepts English Proficiency scores from a single test date, not MyBest scores. Test results that are over 2 years old will not be accepted.
Minimum English Proficiency Test Scores
Applicants may upload unofficial score reports to Acceptd for application review. Admitted students who choose to enroll will be required to submit official test scores to the School of Music using the instructions below.
All applicants must submit their highest single-test score by the December 1 application deadline.

Admitted International Graduate Students
IMPORTANT DATES
- April 15: Submit Intent to Enroll Form
- May 1: After submitting your intent to enroll form, you will receive an email from the Office of International Education (OIE) to login using your Andrew ID to the MyOIE portal. You will use the MyOIE portal to request your Certificate of Eligibility (I-20 or DS-2019) from Carnegie Mellon.
